Only the good stuff

I read a lot and love to read. I find great pleasure in good science fiction, and enjoy thinking about the great stories I've read and agonizing over what will come next. The information I provide here is for me. I long been a voracious reader, but never a review writer. But I've been tempted to try to document my thoughts on the why, what and how of the books I enjoyed. But do feel free to peruse, and please do suggest a great read you think I'd like.

Escape from Hell

Escape from Hell - Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Jennifer Hanover a wonderfully imaginative story

The Legacy of Heorot (Heorot, No 1)

The Legacy of Heorot (Heorot, No 1) - Larry Niven;Steven Barnes;Jerry Pournelle an interesting but small story

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (Signet Classics)

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass - Lewis Carroll Some clever bits, but it's a kids story. I'll read it to my kids someday.

The Mote in God's Eye

The Mote in God's Eye - Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle Fantastic. A dense read and complicated story that eventually unfolds in a satisfactory fashion. Not all of the pieces are spelled out, but enough information is hinted to allow the reader to eventually understand the situation well enough to feel on top of the story.

Not a character story...in fact, the characters are rather thin. But the story is well imagined and told.

Quicksilver (The Baroque Cycle, Vol. 1)

Quicksilver - Neal Stephenson I'll say this...

It was a very creative story, and well written by a master. But I couldn't get into it. I simply drowned in it, and gave up about 1/2 way through.

I am disappointed in this conclusion, so much so that I had not fully resigned myself to failure for over a year of not reading it anymore. But it is done.

Perhaps I try again in a few years. Maybe.

Old Man's War

Old Man's War - John Scalzi a stunningly imaginative story

Inferno

Inferno - Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle very good story

Anathem

Anathem - Neal Stephenson I love this story, and I am proud of myself for the effort it took to understand the story. Damn, I showed unusual patience for this book that required me to learn another language (kidding). But the effort paid off, and this story has raised my level.

WARNING: do not think this is an easy read. And, be ready to reread at least once to fully appreciate what is happening. But if you are strong, you can find a real treasure here.

Six Easy Pieces: Essentials of Physics By Its Most Brilliant Teacher

Six Easy Pieces: Essentials of Physics By Its Most Brilliant Teacher - Richard P. Feynman not so easy...stretch your mind

Power and Influence

Power and Influence - John P. Kotter, Kotter why the hell didn't I read this 15 years sooner

The Descent

The Descent - Jeff Long This is a great read. In some ways the author seems to be unrefined, but somehow naturally better than a well trained writer. I enjoyed the heck out of this book and have read it multiple times already. Do not think the movie is anything like the book. The Descent rocks!

Starship Troopers

Starship Troopers - Robert A. Heinlein I loved the story and the political philosophy

Ilium

Ilium - Dan Simmons Spectacular. I loved the interplay between the robots, the literary references, and the reimagining of the Iliad. The lynchpin of the story is why would the post humans do such a thing is an unresolved question, but perhaps the answer lies somewhere in the ocean of human weakness and the temptations of absolute evil.

Olympos

Olympos - Dan Simmons This is a worthy companion to Illium, but not quite as good.

Cryptonomicon

Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson a hard read; a great story....I actually learned a lot about cryptography

The Rise of Endymion

The Rise of Endymion - Dan Simmons This is the best of the bunch.
